Reel Forecast: Ghost World, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Godfather Part III, and more

20120119_reelforecast.jpgFilm screening suggestions for the week of January 20-26 | Unless you're a Satanist (and I'm not judging), you'll want to check out Ghost World this Saturday at the Cinémathèque québécoise. It's part of their doom generation program of films, painting a large black swatch of apathy on a generation raised by Columbine and matured by 9/11. Unsurprisingly, the following film on the program is Gus Van Sant's Elephant playing on the 25th. (+) For those unsuccessfully beaten down by his Metamorphosis and The Trial, Kafka, a 1991 film by Steven Soderbergh, paints a fictional account of his life based on the moods of his writings. This also plays Saturday. (+)

Early next week, let the Rialto Theatre on Parc Avenue treat you to a film, snacks and canolis for $15 (less for students and "Italians"). The film is an odd choice: The Godfather Part III, considered to be the lesser film of the trilogy. Nevertheless, if you've been holding out on completing the trilogy due to negative reviews, Tuesday's your opportunity to see some fantastic acting on the part of Coppola's daughter. (+) The night before, the Rialto plays host to La règle du jeu, Jean Renoir's classic that has oft been named one of the best films ever made. The film plays in original French with English subtitles. (+)

Cineplex continues to diversify its offerings with the Classic Film Series. This Sunday at 1pm you can catch David Lean's The Bridge on the River Kwai. An important note for film enthusiasts is that none of these are on film, but rather digital screenings. For the uninitiated, this is kind of like watching a DVD on a really big screen. Nevertheless, at $5, it's a steal. (+)

Rounding out the possibilities this week are the Zanzibar Musical Club at Cinéma du Parc (+), the second part of the Travelling Tour of the 49th Ann Arbor Film Festival at Segal Centre (+), and a few free screenings of local Québécois films: Trou Story plays at CÉGEP André-Laurendeau (111, rue Lapierre, LaSalle QC) on the 25th at 7:30pm, and Coteau Rouge plays at Maison de la culture Frontenac (2550 rue Ontario Est) at the same time.

"...uninitiated, this is kind of like watching a DVD on a really big screen."

How do you figure?

Okay, so I was being a facetious snob.

Technically, the quality of digital theatre screenings is very high (with a resolution near film quality), but I am lamenting the fact that it's becoming increasingly rare to get classic films projected on film as they were originally screened.
